From Berlin to »Germania«

The »Heavy Load-Bearing Body« bears witness to the most megalomaniacal construction project Berlin has ever seen. Under the direction of the General Inspector for Buildings Albert Speer, Adolf Hitler’s architect, planning for a gigantic project commenced in 1937 that was intended to completely redesign Berlin.

The Second World War put an end to the National Socialists’ inhuman urban planning.

Uncomfortable Memorial – an art project in the SBK

This year he theme fort he day of open memorials goes beyond the good and pretty: uncomfortable memorial. Almost no other memorial is more accord to this theme than the Heavy Load-Bearing Body in Tempelhof-Schöneberg in Berlin.

It is an engineering technic test construction from 1941, built presumably by force workers from France.

Its finality was to proof the carrying capacity of the Berlin sandy ground for the megalomaniac construction project from Albert Speer and Hitler for the future “World Capital Germania”.

A subtle intervention with moos transform the atmosphere from the inside room of the Heavy Load-Bearing Body in a ruin atmosphere. Using elements that were used in Prussia to build ruins during the Romantic Epoch there is an intention to provoke nostalgic feelings in a place that is beautiful as a place but historically related to the National Socialism.

With this project I question the expiration date of some memorials and the social klinging to keep the collective memory „Kollektive Erinnerung“ alive in Germany, specially in Berlin, a cosmopolitan city that has over one million people coming from all over the world every year. This memorial culture initialing having the intension to not forget the history, creates on the other hand a tematic scenario in the city that increases tourism and that is one of the main causes of the drastic change of perception or imagination of history. Through the increase of tourism and the actual migratory movements the German memorial culture coexists with many different discourses and is perceived from many different contexts.
